Assistantship in Statistical Science

PhD Teaching Assistantship in Statistical Science

Start Date: September 2018

Applications are invited for a PhD funding opportunity to conduct research in a branch of probability or statistics based in the UCL Department of Statistical Science, commencing in September 2018.

The Teaching Assistantship will be 3.5 years in duration and covers tuition fees (up to the Overseas rate) plus a maintenance stipend of £16,777 per annum. The Teaching Assistant will spend 6 months of their time teaching (spread across the 3.5 years) and devote the remainder to undertaking their research.

Studentship Information

The Department is among the three largest statistics groups in the UK with 30 academic members of staff including Professors Richard Chandler, Petros Dellaportas, Serge Guillas, Sofia Olhede, Rumana Omar and Afzal Siddiqui. The Department’s methodological research is organised into five themes:

  • Biostatistics;
  • Computational statistics;
  • General theory and methodology;
  • Multivariate and high dimensional data;
  • Stochastic modelling and time series.

Research often cuts across these areas. Much of this work is interdisciplinary and involves collaborations within and outside UCL.

Person Specification

The requirement for admission to the MPhil/PhD in Statistical Science is a 1st class or high upper 2nd class Bachelor’s degree, or a Master’s degree with merit or distinction, in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative discipline. Overseas qualifications of an equivalent standard are also acceptable. Further details can be found on the Departmental website.

Applicants are expected to prepare an outline proposal of their work. This is crucial in identifying potential supervisors. Thus, candidates should peruse the research interests of staff before applying.

How to Apply

Candidates should apply for the Research Degree: Statistical Science (RRDSTASING01) in the usual way by completing the online form and, in addition (and very importantly), send a covering letter directly to the Department making their case for the funding. The covering letter should be sent to Dr Russell Evans at stats.pgr-admissions@ucl.ac.uk.
