Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 36 months in the first instance.
Applications are invited for the position of post-doctoral research associate/assistant to work on the UKRI-funded (ERC advanced grant replacement) project on “Limits of Symmetric Computation” led by Professor Anuj Dawar.
The project seeks to investigate lower bounds on symmetric computation in the context of algorithmic problems related to constraint satisfaction and graph isomorphism. It brings to bear significant new mathematical (algebraic and topological) methods to the study of symmetric computation. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in some or all of these mathematical areas and a desire to apply them to the study of computational problems.
The successful candidate will work closely with the PI (Professor Dawar) in a team of other researchers on the project. Other key aspects of the role include writing and collaborating on research papers, presenting the research at national and international events, and actively participating in the Logic and Algorithms research group.
Essential requirements
The candidate must have a PhD in Mathematics or Computer Science, or be close to completing one. The candidate must also have a demonstrated ability to carry out research in these areas as evidenced by significant research publications in mathematics or theoretical computer science.
Desirable skills
The ideal candidate will have specific research background in areas of mathematics (algebra, topology or category theory) that are relevant to the project, or alternatively a record of research in areas of theoretical computer science, including descriptive complexity or the theory of constraint satisfaction problems.
